Catalog Description: (prerequisite: ARTS 3000) ARTS 4795. Professional Practice (3-0-3)

Prerequisite: ARTS 3000. An introduction to methods and issues of professional presentation

including written and visual documentation.

 

Objective:

1. This course will address several of the issues and skills helpful in developing a professional portfolio.

2. Students will be required to build their professional portfolio to assist them in career

opportunities, application to graduate programs, and networking their artistic production to

galleries and exhibition opportunities.

3. Students are required to write and do research.

4. Students are required to build a website.

5. Students are expected to turn in all reading and assignments on time.

6. Students will be required to attend Exhibitions and Lectures throughout the semester.

7. Students will be required to practice develop a studio practice.

 

Outcomes:

Students will acquire knowledge and skills to:

1. Build a professional art portfolio: for exhibition opportunities, graduate schools and career

opportunities in the arts.

2. Build a professional artist website.

3. Develop exhibition understanding.

4. Writing and applying for exhibitions, grants, and the art of business.

5. Community and sustainable practices.

COVID GUIDELINES

The University System of Georgia (USG) strongly encourages all faculty, staff, students, and visitors to get vaccinated in order to safely promote the typical student and faculty interactions in and outside the classroom. Face coverings are also strongly recommended while inside campus facilities/buildings regardless of vaccination status. If you are not able to attend class due to illness, please send an email to indicate that you will be absent. In lieu of attending class, you may access the course materials through CougarView, and participate remotely until such time that you are able to return to class. Please keep me informed on your ability to return to class, in accordance with CDC guidelines, as it is important for me to know when to expect you

in-person.

situation, please monitor your official CSU email for notices of updates to this site.

Attendance / Lateness / Deadlines:

• Attendance is mandatory - absences and lateness will affect your grade.

• Students who test positive and/ in quarantine will not be counted as absence.

• You are responsible for information missed due to an absence or lateness.

• A student is permitted to accumulate a total of nine (9) hours of absences in a three credit hour course without exclusion. An instructor may exclude a student and assign the grade of

“WF” upon accumulation of 10 or more hours of absences, or the equivalent in courses

carrying fewer credit hours.

• You have three absences any absences after three will result in the loss of one letter grade.

• Attendance is taken at the beginning of class and at the end of class if need be. Coming to

class 15 minutes late and leaving early will result in an absence.

• Being asked to leave for inappropriate conduct or safety infraction such as use of mobile

phones, being unprepared for class or behaving in a manner that threatens the safety of

yourself or others will count as an absence.

• Excessive absence policy Anytime during the semester when a student exceeds the total

number of hours of absences allowed (4 absences), an instructor may drop the student for

excessive absences with a grade of WF. Students may regain admittance to a course only by permission of the instructor. A student auditing a course who fails to meet class participation and assignment requirements or who exceeds the total number of allowed absences may be dropped from the course by the instructor and assigned a grade of W. Any grade assigned as a W, WF, WC, or WM may result in a student debt to VA.

• Learning Environment: Students and course instructors share the responsibility for

maintaining an appropriate, orderly learning environment. Mobile telephones and pagers are not permitted. Students who fail to adhere to the behavioral expectations outlined by the

instructor may be subject to discipline in accordance with the procedures described in the

Student Handbook.

Emotional and Mental Health Statement

Your emotional and mental health is very important and can affect your ability to meet your

academic responsibility. Part and full time students have free access to mental

health counseling through the CSU Counseling Center. If you begin to experience any sort of emotional concerns such as anxiety, depression, or significant life events that are negatively impacting you, please seek help at the counseling center as quickly as possible. Please know that you will find a friendly “virtual” face for your appointments. Hours of operation are 8:00AM to 8:00PM Monday and Tuesday and 8:00AM to 5:00PM Wednesday through Friday. Course withdrawals Students who wish to drop a course after the official schedule change

period has ended must officially withdraw from the course. The student is responsible for

notifying the CSU Veterans Affairs Office. Students must withdraw via the web by

using CougarNet and the Enrollment Services Tab.

Administrative withdrawal - an academic dean may withdraw a student from a course when, in consultation with the instructor, the dean determines that the student has not satisfied the

prerequisites for the course.

The Drop/Add courses

Schedule Change, Drop/Add (100% Refund)

. If you wish to drop this course after the schedule change period, you may do so on ISIS. No signatures are required to drop a course if the transaction is completed by the midpoint of the semester. (Refer to the Schedule of Courses book for a specific date and additional information regarding course withdrawal.) Any course dropped after the regular drop/add period becomes part of your academic record. A grade of “W” will be assigned for withdrawal forms submitted by the deadline. A grade of “WF” will be assigned for withdrawal form received after the deadline or if you are dropped from the course. Failure to attend class or verbal notice of withdrawing does not constitute official withdrawal and will result in the grade “F” or “WF”.

CLASS WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURE: Students who wish to drop a course after the last

official day of schedule change must officially withdraw from the course. Students must

withdraw using the Integrated Student Information System (ISIS) on the university’s Web

at https://registration.columbusstate.edu/withdraw.php
